Kenny Chesneys You Save Me Gets THREE CMT Nominations
When Kenny Chesney went to Mexico City to film "You Save Me," he was looking for a little bit more than some beer in Mexico. Having long captured moments of the lives of people like himself, he wanted to dig a little deeper, expand his understanding of the cinemographic process and see if he could stretch himself to play something more than a good-timing, good ole guy from Luttrell, Tennessee.
Yesterday, CMT announced the finalists for their annual CMT Video Music Awards -- and if there was ever any doubt about the level of accomplishment in his "You Save Me" clip, the nominations for Best Male and Overall Video -- to be voted by the fans themselves, as well as director Shaun Silva's second Director of the Year was pretty telling acknowledgement. The recognition was especially appreciated for a clip that redefined the quality of what Chesney's videos have always strived for.
"There were some people who thought Shaun and I were crazy to spend all that money, going to Mexico, hiring some pretty high end film people for the explosions and effects, but it just felt like it was time to challenge ourselves," Chesney says of the clip, which was shot over a week in a place is light years physically and culturally from his home away from home in the Caribbean. "I didn't know going in if I could act. and obviously, there's a whole deeper level to the action. But Shaun and I had been looking for a way to make more than just a video about my life on the road, and this seemed like the place to take the shot."
The risk obviously has paid off in a trio of nominations for the clip. The clip, which features Chesney as a DEA agent who knows it's time to get out -- in part because he has something to live for beyond the job -- shows a steely resolve, strong vulnerability and a sensual side that had gone unexpressed in videos to here.
"Shaun really got it out of me," the reigning and back-to-back Academy of Country Music and two-time and current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year said of the director's work. "And I am so glad they recognized Shaun. He's not only been a big part of bringing who I am to life, all the way back to 'Young,' our first video from No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems -- but he realizes that there is more to it than palm trees and beaches, and I think he really came up with something deeper for us to realize."
Silva was also nominated for Director of the Year in 2006 for Chesney's very forward in terms of production effects and wistful performance clip for "Who You'd Be Today," also from his triple platinum The Road & The Radio Chesney won Favorite Male Video at last year's CMT Video Music Awards -- as well the People's Choice Awards Favorite Male Musician.
"You don't do it for the awards," Chesney laughed, "but trust me, everyone likes to know their work stood out. Especially when someone like Shaun gets recognized. He works so hard and has such amazing vision. I really think he gets the idea of making movies to songs like no one else."
