Kenny Chesney Launches Sun& Picks Up American Music Award Nod
Los Angeles: Having already picked up seven nominations for this fall's Country Music Association Awards, Kenny Chesney received an American Music Award nomination for Favorite Country Male while moving through his Lucky Old Sun release week media. Having won the all-genre 2004 Fan Favorite AMA over Usher, Evanescence, Outkast and Norah Jones, Chesney is a big fan of the AMAs.
"One of the things that's so cool about the AMAs," Chesney allows, "is having all the genres together. You've got hip-hop and rock and pop music people, too, turning out. So it's like getting to see the best of all kinds of music in one place. It's always a lot of fun to be a part of."
With a "Tonight Show" performance this evening, "Ellen" and "Access Hollywood" slated for Friday and features in USA Today, Newsweek, People, The Tennessean and next week's cover of Country Weekly, the man who just wrapped his seventh straight tour playing to in excess of a million fans is maintaining his high profile.
"You want to get out there … you want to share the music with people. That's always been one of the cool things about the American Music Awards; there's always a sense of the fans. When you get one of these nominations, you know that when you're out there, the people in the house are alive and loud and having fun."
Monday night, Chesney also picked up an International Entertainment Buyers' Award for Large Touring Act of the Year. In addition to four consecutive and reigning Academy of Country Music and three and current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Awards, Chesney finds himself once again competing for Entertainer, as well as Male Vocalist, Album for Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates, Single and Video for "Don't Blink" and a pair of Vocal Events for "Shiftwork" with George Strait and "Every Other Weekend" with Reba McEntire.
"You don't do this for the awards," Chesney says. "But that doesn't mean you don't like hearing your name called. Of course, you do. And I love seeing this music get recognized, because we work really hard on it. It's good when people notice."
Certainly "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven," sitting at 1 for the second consecutive week, is catching people's ears - and eyes - with the video that features the Wailers. The lead single from Lucky Old Sun - which will be released in a straight-up music-only version next week - "Heaven" merges Chesney good-time, small-town vibe with the more "seeking" vibe of this record.
