Leaked Single - Never Wanted Nothing More - Blows Up Over Weekend
Everywhere: It's been two years - and two impossibly successful concert tours, seeing Kenny Chesney as the biggest ticket selling act in North America - and now with the prospect of new music, America can't get the country-steeped “Never Wanted Nothing More,” the lead single from Chesney's highly anticipated Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates, fast enough. With the single leaked and hitting the airwaves, the quiet man from Luttrell, Tennessee finds himself sitting at #37 in less than 57 hours.
“It's crazy,” Chesney says of the response. “You know, when you're making a record, you're so isolated in the studio, you sort of lose perspective… and for me, you know, when I was looking at something to give people a taste of what this record is, well, there's so much of it, I knew I couldn't do it all - so I went with something country, something tempo, something everybody is likely to be experiencing right now!
“There's no exact science, so you never know. That's why I went with something that felt good and is kinda where I come from… and I guess people are liking it. And just think, we've got so much more ground to cover with this record.”
Again working with co-producer Buddy Cannon - who also joined Chesney to produce America icon Willie Nelson's next record - the triple Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year harnessed the desire that fires so many of life's driving firsts - car, girl, marriage, faith - for a banjo-driven acoustic-based slice of joy. Beyond bluegrass legend Ronnie Bowman and white hot country songwriter Chris Stapleton, writers ranging from Don Schilitz and Brett James to Scooter Carusoe, Bill Anderson and Jon Randall have been tapped for the follow-up to Chesney's triple platinum The Road & The Radio, his fourth album to debut at #1 on Billboard's all-genre Top 200 Albums.
“It's amazing what you learn about life even when you're on the road, and looking at the world through a bus window,” Chesney explains. “Our fans bring their whole life to our shows - and even though they come to party and have a good time, you can see it on their faces when you sing 'There Goes My Life' or 'Anything But Mine'… and I hang onto everything I see. Guess that's the songwriter in me, huh?”
With “Never Wanted Nothing More” blowing up at country radio - and exponential increases in spins coming as the week begins - Chesney heads to Columbus, Ohio on June 7th, then to Pittsburgh's Heinz Field on Saturday, June 9th, for his first NFL Stadium show of the 2007 Flip-Flop Summer Tour, presented by Cruzan Rum. With stadiums shows in Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia and Seattle still to come, the Flip-Flop Summer is heading out the door in a big way… even as it's selling out venues from coast-to-coast.
“One thing about my fans: they like to get outside, they like to tailgate and the like to have fun. For me and the guys, we couldn't want nothing more
