Tampa/West Palm Beach: Tropical Storm Barry hit Florida hard, but no harder than Kenny Chesney – who also swept through Raleigh and Atlanta in a matter of minutes. While the reigning Academy of Country Music triple Entertainer of the Year was rocking the Sunshine State, the tickets for his upcoming Raleigh, NC and Atlanta, GA shows were gone in less than half an hour – and second shows were added within moments, to go on sale this Saturday.
“People tell you this stuff, and even all these years later, it’s still kind of hard to get your head around,” says Chesney, who played to beyond capacity crowds in Florida this weekend. “Both of those markets are insane for us… two years ago in Raleigh, they were even using wire cutters to put holes in the fence to get in, because there were no more tickets… but what’s best about all of it is how insane the fans have been this year: just when I’m sure they can’t rock any harder, they show me a whole new level of how loud, how crazy, how much fun they can have at a show.”
Even a tropical storm couldn’t dampen the fans spirits in Tampa, where they showed up early and stayed late. The tail-gaiting in West Palm Beach began before noon – and people in the parking lot were still dancing to their car stereos long after midnight. With good friends from the islands in for the weekend, fans were also treated to “Island Boy” and “Old Blue Chair,” as well as Uncle Kracker popping in for “When The Sun Goes Down,” “Follow Me” and their classic “Midnight Rider/Cowboy” medley, as well as a raucous take on David Allan Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By My Name.”
“Our first real headlining tour started in West Palm with ‘Young’ as a single and No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems about to come out… a lot’s happened. It’s good knowing the fans continue digging what we’re doing, and knowing these songs remain such a part of their life, especially their summer.”
The insanity for Chesney’s music continues. With “Never Wanted Nothing More,” the country-grounded single was available for radio to download on Friday at 3:00 pm central, landing the Ronnie Bowman/ Chris Stapleton song on every radio station, convertible, truck and every other kind of car sound system. With only 57 hours of airplay, “Never Wanted Nothing More,” charted at 37 on the Billboard/R&R Chart and 44 on Aircheck.
“People know our shows are pretty loud and pretty crazy,” admits Chesney, with a laugh. “Even when we’re rocking it hard, at the end of the day, I’m still a country artist and this is the music that I come from. ‘Never Wanted Nothing More’ is one of those songs that not only talks about all the things in life we want so much – that first car, that first girl – but it also hits home for me.”
The lead track from Chesney’s Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates sets the pace for the first new music in two years from the two-time and current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year. With his tour in high gear, a single burning up the charts and an album in the wings, summer must really be here.
