TAMPA - If you love the beach, you learn to live with the rain. So Kenny Chesney and his fans weren't about to let a little precipitation spoil the party.
Even though about half of the sold-out crowd was on the Ford Amphitheatre lawn getting a direct dousing, the enthusiasm never seemed to wane for Chesney, who recently picked up his third Entertainer of the Year award from the Academy of Country Music.
Chesney's image and a fair number of his songs celebrate the beach lifestyle, and his fans were happy to join in the fun - it's probably the only concert where the combination of cowboy hats and leis was commonplace, not to mention a near-constant barrage of beach balls bouncing through the crowd.
Chesney and his seven-piece band kicked off with "Beer in Mexico," a song that typifies his blend of classic rock and arena-friendly country. "Big Star" boasted a twin-guitar solo that could have come from the band Boston.
There also was room for the easy-going lilt of "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem" and the ballad "You Save Me."
For "You Save Me," Chesney invited actress Kelly Preston onstage for a serenade. Before that, Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden joined Chesney to toss a few footballs into the crowd during "Back Where I Come From."
Sugarland's set, preceding Chesney's, suggested Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush aren't long from headlining 20,000-seaters themselves.
Nettles has an endearing, antidiva presence, and the band's songs pack the sort of hooks that appeal to pop and country fans alike, such as "Down in Mississippi (And Up to No Good)" and "Baby Girl."
They also had the chutzpah to remake Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" as an acoustic hoedown.
Singer Pat Green opened the show with a brief set.
