Triple ACM Entertainer of the Year Back To Making New Music
Fresh from becoming only the 4th artist in the history of the Academy of Country Music to win their coveted Entertainer of the Year, Kenny Chesney celebrated the way you'd expect a man who understands how he's become one of the genre's defining voices would: by returning to the studio and creating music for his next record. While no firm release date has been set, the man who last year sold 1.3 million concert tickets and is in the midst of his equally white-hot Flip-Flop Summer Tour is casting his eye to new music.
“We have been listening to songs almost since The Road & The Radio was in process,” confesses the soft-spoken songwriter from East Tennessee. “You carry certain songs with you… and I think if you're truly about the music, it's not something you turn on and off when you need to make a new record. I write, bits and pieces, all the time, and nothing thrills me more than hearing a great song, whether it's on a Jack Johnson record or coming to me from some writer a friend of mine tells me I have to hear.
“Obviously there's a lot more to what we do than making records,” continues the man who is also the two-time and reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year. “When we're out on the road, everybody knows where we are and what we're doing. Writing songs, making records isn't necessarily what people see us doing, but I promise you it's the soul of all of it. Finding those songs that speak to my fans, that really say something about how I live my life, what I hope to find or what, maybe, I think I've learned… that is what this career has been built on, first and foremost.”
Again working with co-producer Buddy Cannon, who shared in the ACM's Song of the Year award for co-writing George Strait's “Give It Away,” Chesney has been holed up in various Nashville studios, tracking, overdubbing and mixing several songs that will end up on his fall 2007 release. Drawing on several of the writers who've been a part of Chesney's magic to here, as well as some new voices and a song or two from his own pen, the ocean-loving musician will be spending his coming weeks deciding what all will make the final cut for the follow-up to his fourth consecutive all-genre Billboard Top 200 debut.
“At this point, there are so many ways this record could go,” he admits. “We've found some pretty amazing songs… some that are just what you'd expect, some that change things up a little, some that are a bit more reflective. But I think the more we listen, the more the songs that should be on there rise up and talk to each other.”
Chesney, who returns to the Flip Flop Summer Tour - presented by Cruzan Rum - May 31 in New Orleans, before swinging into Florida and then playing his first NFL Stadium Saturday June 9 in Pittsburgh, is a busy man. In addition to his tour and his record, he's also just finished the Willie Nelson project he co-produced with longtime creative collaborator Cannon… and there's no telling what else he may get into over the course of finishing this project.
