Legendary Sax Player Jim Horn Joins ACM Performance
Las Vegas, NV: He's won back-to-back and is the current Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year, based on his high energy, partycentric concert performances and songs that hit the pulsepoint of his fans, so of course Kenny Chesney would find a way to up the fun factor on tonight's Academy of Country Music Awards, where he's also nominted for Top Male Vocalist. Rather than throw a pool party or use pyrotechnics - as he's done in recent years - the singer/songwriter from Luttrell, Tennessee has enlisted a horn section that includes legendary saxman Jim Horn.
“It's a real treat to get to do 'Beer In Mexico' with a horn section,” says Chesney of performing his first solely-penned #1 record on the ACM Awards telecast. “It's one of those good time songs that just wants to have fun -- and the horns take it to a whole other level. Plus, to get Jim Horn, who's played with everyone from Elvis to the Stones to all of the Beatles, well, that's some history.”
Chesney's not kidding about the rock icon, who indeed played on the Rolling Stones' Goats Head Soup, as well as classic recordings by Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, U2, the Beachboys, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Roy Orbison, the Travelling Wilburys, Delaney & Bonnie, Jackson Browne and each of the Beatles on a solo project. Always one to look for a way to make the music mean a little bit more, Chesney is always one to enlist the very best surprise musicians -- whether it's Eddie Van Halen, Uncle Kracker or John Mellencamp.
“When you think about the places Jim's been, the music he's made -- and the people he's made it with,” says the musician who's played to over a million people each of the past five summers, “it's almost a little too much, having him up there. But he's such a good guy, you know, it also adds a little more punch for me and the guys… cause we're psyched to be part of Jim's history.
Written at Sammy Hagar's pool in Cano San Lucas, Mexico, Chesney's three week chart-topper captures the freewheeling celebration of life that's defined the man currently in the midst of the Flip-Flop Summer 2007 Tour. A breezy look at the directions that define one's life -- and the decisions that don't always have to be right now, even though everyone's waiting - “Beer In Mexico” is a place keeper for anyone who's ever wanted to just check-out for a few days.
“I was talking to a p.d. in catering the other night, and he was telling me that the lyric was his life, you know,” laughs the man who is also a two-time and current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year. “It's amazing how many people, men and women both, all go through the realizing you don't always have to know right now and it's okay to just enjoy the moment.
“I know when we get onstage with the horn section, me and the band are gonna enjoy that a whole lot. You know, big fun, something special -- and then, it's over… and we can get back to rocking on our own.”
