I know the story has been posted b4, but I thought I would post this one too. I LOVE Sammy Hagar. He is one of my favs.
May 11, 2007 — Kenny Chesney gathered with friends in a Music Row park in Nashville Wednesday to celebrate the No. 1 success of his hit "Beer In Mexico." While the song is his 13th visit to the top of the charts, it's the first No. 1 that he wrote by himself.
But Kenny tells Dial-Global he's been close to the top of the charts before with his own work. "I almost got one with 'When I Go Back' but I think I might have set a record for a number two record. It was behind 'Live Like You Were Dying' for nine weeks."
Kenny says "Beer in Mexico" is a true example of how you never know where a song will come from. "This song came out of nowhere," he says. "I was at Sammy Hagar's birthday party several years ago, and we were literally up all night. About five o'clock in the morning, everybody else went to bed and I got one of Sammy's guitars out. I knew that I was getting ready to sleep the rest of the day, so that's where the line came from: 'I'll sit right here and have another beer in Mexico and do my best to waste another day.'"
Kenny says he's especially proud of his solo No. 1, adding, "For a guy who came to Nashville and had no idea how it worked and was lucky enough to get signed to Acuff Rose all those years ago, and spent all those hours with the great songwriters, trying to learn from them?having a No. 1 record that I wrote on my own is a whole other kind of thing."
