Kenny Chesney, Men's Journal + the Ultimate Beach Party
With Flip-Flop Summer 2007 Off To a Sold-Out Start, June Issue Taps an Expert
Nashville: Kicking off the Flip-Flop Summer 2007 Tour in Omaha, Kenny Chesney's on the road -- officially bringing the season to life from coast-to-coast. So when Men's Journal was looking for someone to give them tips for “the Ultimate Beach Party,” they came straight to the man who spent nine weeks at #1 last year with his own “Beer In Mexico” -- composed at Sammy Hagar's swimming pool in Cabo San Lucas” -- and the breezy “Summertime” for his tips on what brings a beach party to life.
“They wanted 10 tips,” Chesney says of the outdoors/men's magazine's request. “And the real deal is: if you're making lists -- or thinking that much, you're kinda missing the point. The whole idea's to stop thinking, to kick back, watch the sun move across the sky and just be in the moment having fun.”
That thinking certainly applies to Chesney's fans, who bring those principles to life -- this weekend in Greensboro, NC, Columbia, SC and two-nights in Jacksonville, FL. Long on tail-gates, potted palm trees, spontaneous football, freestyle Frisbee, the occasional guy in a grass skirt and a whole lotta love, the parking lots have a way of erupting into spontaneous outbreaks of the very kind of kicked back celebration that mark the laidback singer/songwriter's life off-the-road.
“It was a little cold for that sorta thing in Fargo and Des Moines,” Chesney admitted about his opening weekend's opportunity for the pre-show parties that evoke his off-the-road life and set the tone for the show that's about to unfold. “So, those folks really brought the will to kick off the summer into the house. From the moment we hit the stage, it was full-tilt and loud as can be… We'd been off the road for seven months, but they were so live, it was as if we'd just taken a two-week break.
“If this is how this how this year's gonna be, it's gonna be pretty incredible.”
For Men's Journal, Chesney got down to basics: talking about music, food, mood and the most essential ingredient - the mix of people. He was also practical, advising readers about multi-purpose clothing (flip-flops with bottle openers), self-preservation, practicality and an escape plan. The June issue will be on newsstands early-to-mid-May.
For fans who won't be in a city near the Flip Flop Summer 2007 Tour -- brought to you by Cruzan Rum -- they can go behind the scenes, watch the evolution of what, if only for the sheer temperature on stage, is destined to be the year's hottest tour on April 21 when Great American Country debuts the first part of a two hour documentary “Kenny Chesney: The Making of the Flip-Flop Summer Tour.” The second part -- which will include footage from Chesney's much-heralded Keg In The Closet commando college bar tour and the full-tilt opening weekend -- first airs April 28.
Look for the back-to-back and reigning Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year to try to make it a triple on May 15th's ACM Awards telecast live from Las Vegas on CBS. Catch him, too, on the road, in Men's Journal and on car radios anywhere people are ready for summer to begin.
